Rotary Take 100's of Kids to Drayton Manor

Members of the Soar Valley and Loughborough Rotary Clubs took all pupils at Maplewell Hall School, Woodhouse Eaves to Drayton Manor Theme Park on Wednesday 11th June. In fact the whole school was emptied for the day as teaching and administration staff came along for the ride as well! It took three large coaches and a number of smaller vehicles to get everyone down the M42 to Drayton Manor.

The day was part of Rotary's annual KIDS OUT, when Rotary Clubs throughout the British Isles offer to take school children with a disadvantage of some kind to a local theme park, zoos etc.

Rotary took over Drayton Manor for the day as thousands of youngsters through more than one hundred Midlands Rotary Clubs enjoyed the rides, ate ice creams or just had a good time. The event always takes place on the second Wednesday in June. This date is pretty well set in stone as all the children go out on the same day thus fulfilling the original dream of ‘a national day out for disabled children' . In 2007 some 28,000 children from every part of the British Isles were given an unforgettable day.

Loading the aeroplane with Shelter Boxes for Burma

Shelterbox Appeal

One of the first charities to get help to the victims of the recent catastrophes in Burma and China has been Shelterbox, a charity started in 2000 by UK Rotarians, to provide help in disasters around the world.

Shelterboxes contain tents, mosquito nets, tools and water purifying tablets and are kept in store to be shipped out as soon as a need is identified.

Over the last few days

  • An initial supply of boxes were sent to Myrama ( Burma ) with a 4 person UK team, to distribute the aid

  • Last Thursday a DC10 aircraft arrived from East Midlands Airport with further 1,000 boxes and further team members.

  • ShelterBox has also sent boxes to assist the earthquake victims in China, channelled through the Hong Kong and Beijing Rotary Clubs and the China Charity Federation, destined for Sichuan Province .

Shelterbox needs our help to provide the humanitarian aid that is so badly needed and local Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs have already sent funds to support this work, but more money is required to replenish the stock of boxes.

The Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs of the Soar Valley are inviting everyone to help and members will be at the Wyevale Garden Centre, Loughborough Road, Rothley, throughout bank holiday Monday (26 th) to receive donations.

Please help us support the work which ShelterBox is doing.
